Broadcasting Standard Authority

What can I complain about?

The BSA only handles formal complaints about programmes that have been broadcast in New Zealand.

You can complain about any programme that has been screened or played in New Zealand on television or radio, so long as you do it within 20 working days of the broadcast.  You cannot complain about a show before it has aired, even if you think that the broadcast will breach broadcasting standards.

What we cover What we don't cover
  • programmes
  • promos/trailers for programmes
  • free-to-air television
  • radio
  • pay television
  • election advertisements on radio or television (during election periods)
  • advertisements for products and services
  • programmes broadcast outside of New Zealand
  • programmes which have not yet been broadcast
  • scheduling or general quality of programmes
  • reception problems
  • pre-classification of programmes
  • Teletext
  • on-demand internet content
  • print publications

If you just want to express your concern to the broadcaster, rather than make a formal complaint, you should phone or write to them directly.

If your complaint is not something we can deal with you can find contact details of other organisations in the Links section of this website.
