The BSA has a fantastic opportunity for a senior legal advisor to contribute to the BSA’s work in supporting standards in broadcasting, and to be part of the dynamic and evolving media environment.

The Broadcasting Standards Authority is seeking a senior legal advisor to join its team and contribute to its goal to ensure that New Zealanders can confidently engage with broadcast content that does not cause harm.

Reporting to the Legal Manager, the Senior Legal Advisor will be responsible for dealing with broadcasting standards complaints, policy issues and the BSA’s research portfolio. You will manage a portfolio of broadcasting complaints, provide advice to the Authority and liaise with complainants and broadcasters. You will also contribute to BSA research projects, the review of the Broadcasting Standards in New Zealand Codebook, and undertake research relevant to content regulation reforms.

You will bring legal experience and judgement, strong attention to detail and an ability to balance competing interests in complex fact situations. You will have an appreciation for the attitudes and expectations of New Zealand’s diverse, liberal democracy. Candidates with knowledge of Māori and Pasifika perspectives in particular are encouraged to apply. We are looking for an enthusiastic team player who is prepared to pitch in and undertake a variety of responsibilities, and who can communicate well with a cross-section of society. 

To be effective in this key role you will have:

  • A current practicing certificate and at least 5 years’ legal experience
  • Proven experience in the public sector and/or a dispute/complaints resolution role
  • An interest and some experience in human rights and/or broadcasting, media, journalism
  • Strong relationship management skills and the ability to work well with a range of stakeholders
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills
  • Experience in providing strategic legal advice
  • Excellent attention to detail
  • An adaptable, well-organised and pragmatic approach to managing a varied and busy workload
  • Previous research and/or project management experience would be an advantage

The Broadcasting Standards Authority is an independent Crown entity responsible for oversight of the broadcasting standards system. It determines complaints about broadcasting standards, oversees and develops the broadcasting standards system, and engages with and educates broadcasters and the public about broadcasting standards, freedom of expression and harm, community values and attitudes and consumer media literacy.  You can learn more about the BSA at www.bsa.govt.nz.
