The G and T Show, Access Radio. During a mock interview, dealing with the Auckland City Council's decision not to fund the 1998 Hero Parade, it was suggested that Auckland's Deputy Mayor had made a self-sacrifice in appointing himself a "moral monitor" and risking a spontaneous erection by going to the Hero Parade. Not upheld (good taste and decency, discrimination and denigration).

D and 92.2XS - 1998-064

92.2XS news report. Item referred to the Crown laying a new charge against an off-duty policeman accused of attacking a 15-year-old boy. In addition to assault and careless driving charges, it was reported that he now faced a charge of "injuring with intent to cause injury". Not upheld (privacy).

Hildreth and The Radio Network Ltd - 1998-065

Sports programme talkback. Host's comment that rugby sides should have protocols in place to ensure that players did not entertain in their hotel rooms. Complaint that comment reflected badly on a particular Super 12 rugy player who was not named by the host. Not upheld (privacy).

Parfitt and The Radio Network Ltd - 1998-066

Newstalk ZB talkback. Subject was the government's Code for Social Responsibility. Host's comment to a caller to the programme who said he was not qualified to answer some of the questions in the questionnaire attached to the Code. Not upheld (fairness,

TV One commentary during live cricket match discussed residents' opposition to the proposed installation of lights at Eden Park. Not upheld (accuracy, balance).

New Zealand Police (Operation Tam) and Television New Zealand Ltd - 1998-068, 1998-069

TV One News. Item included photographs and names of four people who had been at the Furneaux jetty when two young people went missing in the Marlborough Sounds; the photographs had been released by the Police in conjunction with an investigation. The Police complained that naming the people breached their privacy, because there was a specific request in the accompanying press release that they not be identified by name, and that by being named the four people had not been treated justly and fairly. Not upheld (privacy, fairness).

Pascoe and TV3 Network Services Ltd - 1998-070

Pulp Comedy. Broadcast beginning at 10.20pm contained exually explicit, blasphemous and arguably bad taste jokes from a number of comedians. Not upheld (good taste and decency).

Alien Abduction: Incident in Lake County. Programme purported to show, in documentary fashion, the abduction by extraterrestrial aliens of an American family, recorded on a home video. Upheld (deceptive programme practice). No order.

Connell and Radio New Zealand Ltd - 1998-061

Morning Report. Interview with Auckland City Councillor about his participation in the decision by theAuckland City Council not to grant funds to the 1998 Hero Parade. Not upheld (balance). 

Harang and Turner and Television New Zealand Ltd - 1998-062, 1998-063

Holmes. Item broadcast between 7.00 and 7:30pm dealt with the upcoming Hero Parade in Auckland and included brief excerpts, featuring two women, from the previous year's parade. Upheld (good taste and decency, children's interests).
