Police Stop: Caught in the Action. The caption printed on the screen at the end of the item stated: "It is estimated that 80 per cent of employees would steal from their employer if they had the opportunity". Complaint that the statement discriminated against employees as it made no mention of the percentage of employers who would "short-pay" or otherwise steal from their employees if they had the opportunity. Not upheld (discrimination and denigration).

Hayward and Television New Zealand Ltd - 1996-174

One Network News. Item reviewing the employment policies of some of the political parties advanced for the forthcoming election included pictures of a protest march against the Employment Contracts Act. Complaint that the item suggested that the march was a recent event whereas it was filmed some five to six years before. Not upheld (accuracy, fairness): action taken sufficient.

Borrie and The Radio Network of New Zealand Ltd - 1996-177

Newstalk ZB talkback. Programme focused on the conduct of councillors and observers at Porirua City Council meetings; two councillors, including the complainant, were described by callers and the host as the Council clowns who had turned the Council into a circus. Dale and Fifeshire FM Broadcasters Ltd - 1996-158, 1996-159

Radio Fifeshire FM. Station was sponsor of the Wearable Art Awards. Conversation with listener who said she had tickets available to sell was recorded and played on air without her permission. Bauer and Television New Zealand Ltd - 1996-160

One Network News. Item dealt with search for a three year-old boy swept away in a flooded stream and showed the boy's father participating in the search and being asked about the search's progress. Complaint that the reporter was rude and callous. Not upheld (fairness).

New Zealand Conservative Party and Television New Zealand Ltd - 1996-161, 1996-162

Assignment, Meet the Press. The first of these programmes profiled and analysed three of the minor political parties, the second interviewed the leaders of two of these parties. The New Zealand Conservative Party complained about not being included. Not upheld (balance, accuracy).

Ratewatch and Horizon Pacific Television Ltd - 1996-152

ATV news. Item discussed proposed compromise about the rates to be paid by some ratepayers, which was to be considered at a meeting of the Waitakere City Council that evening. Not upheld (balance); not upheld: majority (fairness).
