Summary [This summary does not form part of the decision.]The Authority has not upheld a complaint that an item on Newshub Live at 6pm on 7 October 2021, reporting on criticism of National Party leader Hon Judith Collins in the Mood of the Boardroom survey, breached the balance and fairness standards by failing to refer to the survey’s criticism of Prime Minister Jacinda Ardern.
The Authority has not upheld a complaint that an item on Newshub Nation about the New Conservative Party breached broadcasting standards. The Authority found that the New Conservative Party was not a recognised section of the community for the purposes of the discrimination and denigration standard, and that the accuracy standard did not apply as the complaint concerned matters of analysis and opinion rather than statements of fact.
This was emphasised in the concluding scene of the promo which showed Newshub is available by app, radio, web and on channel Three. A second, related promo, which returned to see the Murdochs consuming Newshub online, by radio and on television, also made this clear.

Newshub’s reporter relied on multiple separate sources within MPI, all of whom confirmed the information included in the item. Newshub verified the information it received with each source on multiple occasions. Further, Newshub had worked with these sources previously, and the information provided by them previously had proven to be accurate. Therefore, Newshub’s view was that the sources, and the information, were credible.
There are three weekday ‘Newshub’ programmes including Newshub Live at 6pm, Newshub Live at 11.30am, and Newshub Late. The general description provided by the complainant in this respect was therefore insufficient to reasonably enable the broadcaster to identify Newshub Live at 6pm on 22 March 2023 as the broadcast of concern.
A public relations company responded to Newshub on Cloud Ocean Water’s behalf on 13 March (the day before the broadcast). Following a telephone discussion between the PR company and the production team, Newshub sent a long email explaining in detail who else would feature in the broadcast, and asking a comprehensive set of questions regarding the new bore and Cloud Ocean Water’s plans for water extraction and bottling.

They were not identified explicitly by Newshub until they themselves acknowledged and apologised for their actions on social media to thousands of followers the next day.’ ‘In taking steps to blur the participants involved in this incident for the first Broadcast, the Committee maintains that Newshub has treated the men fairly as these steps were taken to minimise any potential unwarranted damage or harm to them.’
The Authority acknowledged the importance of contextual factors in considering whether the standards have been breached, including the nature of Newshub as an unclassified news programme and audience expectations of the broadcast.

Given the risk of ongoing damage to Councillor Harvey’s reputation in his community, a statement and apology to be published in their local regional newspaper, Hawke’s Bay Today.
(reporter) The complaint[3] Donald McDonald complained the Newshub report breached the accuracy standard as the reporter misinterpreted the statistics and misrepresented the results of the drug trial:The Oxford University Professor said ‘tens of thousands of lives’ could have been saved, but Newshub multiplied ‘this figure by ten’, saying ‘hundreds of thousands’.

Some would term it cursing or blaspheming… Newshub could have 'bleeped' out the swearing. I find it offensive that Newshub disrespects the cherished beliefs of so many.[3] Mr Stark also raised the discrimination and denigration standard in his referral, commenting:I realized when Newshub replied to me that their sense of Good Taste and Decency is very different to mine.

It was introduced: Michael Morrah: Newshub can reveal a greyhound club secured thousands of dollars of taxpayer money to replace their unsafe track with a new, safer one. Then, after the new track was built, the club reopened the old, problematic one.
