One standard we oversee that stirs some of the strongest responses and polarised views is ‘discrimination and denigration’.
New ‘Litmus Testing’ researchopen_in_new we’ve done explores public attitudes towards discrimination and denigration on TV and radio and related BSA decisions.
It's apparent from this that younger people are more worried about such content than older generations.
But nearly half of audiences think upholding a complaint of discrimination/denigration should require ‘a high level of condemnation, often with an element of malice’; a quarter don’t.
Sadly, many people from different ethnic groups say they face discrimination and denigration regularly.
We’ll be further assessing the results along with our stakeholder survey and other information as part of our review of the Broadcasting Codes.
