I hope everyone is staying safe and well. I know broadcasters and their teams have been working hard to keep Kiwis informed and entertained during this latest lockdown. It’s an incredibly important role.
Part of what sits behind this is the standards the industry work to. Earlier in the year we surveyed broadcasters and stakeholders about a review of the broadcasting codes.
Some common themes emerged, including the need to simplify and clarify certain areas; further consideration of issues relating to the privacy standard and overseas complaints; whether three separate codes (for free-to-air TV, Pay TV and radio) should continue to be maintained or whether having one for all made more sense; and giving more thought to practical measures which could be taken to ensure the system works better and reflects the needs of NZ’s society.
We discussed these issues further with the Authority and a smaller group of about 20 broadcasters and work has now begun on tackling them. The first focus is on creating one code.
The aim is to complete this work in the next couple of months before sharing it again with the Authority and broadcaster group ahead of public consultation.
