Message from the Chief Executive
Tēnā koutou and seasons greetings
2019 has moved with pace and has brought change, challenge and opportunities with it.
For the BSA, we have continued to work on a steady stream of complaints, with 121 complaints received and 86 decisions issued so far in this calendar year. We have worked seamlessly through changes in Authority membership and changes to our staff team. The Authority held their last meeting for the year last week, where a number of complex complaints were considered.
We have recently concluded our public consultation on the refreshed Election Programmes Code of Broadcasting Practice. The code sets out important safeguards that apply to political speech during the election process. With the 2020 General Election not far away, we want to make sure the code is up to date, user-friendly and assists broadcasters and the public to understand how the standards apply. We received valuable feedback from various interested parties and the public. The refreshed Code will be published early next year.
As we head towards the summer break, the BSA team thank you for working alongside us this year and engaging in our work to support freedom without harm in broadcasting. I also thank the BSA staff and Board team for working so tirelessly throughout this year. Our office will be closed from 5pm on 20 December 2019 and will reopen on 6 January 2020.
