The item included photos of the camp attendees, sourced from public social media accounts, with no masking or blurring. The Authority upheld a direct privacy complaint from IY, who was featured in the photos, that this item breached their privacy. Summary Twenty four references to liquor were included in Super Liquor Sportsnight which was broadcast on TVOne between 10. 30–11. 30pm on 5 July 1999. On behalf of the Group Against Liquor Advertising (GALA), the Complaints Secretary (Cliff Turner) complained to Television New Zealand Ltd, the broadcaster, that the broadcast contravened the guideline which set a limit of references to liquor in an hour long programme to 20. Accordingly, he wrote, the broadcast breached the standard which required that the saturation of liquor promotions be avoided. Acknowledging that 24 liquor promotions had been broadcast, at least in some regions, TVNZ upheld the complaint. Nevertheless as some of the references were brief and would not have given the impression that liquor promotions were preponderant, TVNZ declined to take any further action....

The Authority has upheld a complaint that comments made by Kate Hawkesby on Early Edition with Kate Hawkesby, about the newly introduced Equity Adjustor Score in the Auckland region, were misleading. The Equity Adjustor Score is a system which uses five categories to place patients on the non-urgent surgical waitlist, including clinical priority, time spent waiting, location, deprivation level and ethnicity. Hawkesby made statements to the effect that the Score meant Māori and Pacific Peoples were being ‘moved to the top of surgery waitlists’. The Authority found the comments to be materially misleading in relation to the nature and impact of the Score, as they gave the impression that ethnicity was the only, or the key factor, involved in the assessment, and that Māori and Pacific patients would be given immediate precedence on the surgical waitlist as a result, when this was not the case....

While filling in on Magic Talk’s Magic Mornings, John Banks discussed former CEO Grainne Moss’s departure from Oranga Tamariki. One talkback caller made comments which were endorsed by Mr Banks. MediaWorks found these were denigrating towards Māori and breached the good taste and decency and discrimination and denigration standards. The Authority upheld a complaint that the action taken by MediaWorks did not sufficiently remedy the harm caused by the breaches. It found the comments were foreseeable in the broadcast environment MediaWorks had created.
