Māori Television decisions

BSA has declined to uphold two complaints against Māori Television. See our media release on the complaint by Kōhanga Reo Trust.

In its programme on 9 September 2013, Native Affairs reported concerns about the governance and management of Te Kōhanga Reo National Trust – including allegations that the trust had been improperly providing loans to trustees and senior managers, and misspending public funds. The BSA declined to uphold the trust board’s complaint that the broadcast was inaccurate, unbalanced and unfair.

An item on Native Affairs, entitled ‘Bones of Contention’, reported on the discovery of ‘kōiwi’ (human remains) at a development site in Devonport, and apparent tensions between iwi and the owner and developer of the site, Redback Develop Ltd. The Authority did not uphold the complaint from Redback that the item contained inaccurate information about the development and the discovery of kōiwi.
