Item featured alarm shown by two young boys in a bath when dirty water suddenly bubbled up through the plug hole; when one of the boys stood up, a colourful programme logo was superimposed over his genital area. Mad Max 2 – The Road Warrior. File broadcast at 9.15pm contained a scene showing a motorcycle gang member raping a woman and then shooting her. Not upheld (violence: rape scene was brief, viewed at a distance, and did not contain a prolonged focus on sexually violent content).

RR and TV3 Network Services Ltd - 1999-076, 1999-077

Emergency Heroes. Item showed police patrol responding to a threat from a woman to commit suicide by jumping from a building. Her former husband claimed this breached the privacy of both the woman and her family, saying she was easily identifiable from her voice and clothing. Not upheld (privacy, children's interests, violence).

One Network News. Item reported a fatality at Western Springs Speedway in Auckland. Footage of the accident showing a spectacular crash before the driver was flung out, crushed by his car and killed was repeated during the item. Not upheld (good taste and decency, violence).

Edwards and Television New Zealand Limited - 1999-081

What Now: "Serial Stuff". Character in children’s programme was portrayed eating some oversized food items and made some enthusiastic comments about food; actor playing the character had a larger build than the other actors. Not upheld (discrimination and denigration, children's interests).

Gowardman and TV4 Network Ltd - 1999-082

Eurotrash. A segment in a programme commencing at 8.30pm focused on a "pornography king" and some of his activities; another segment focused on a large man whose naked body was treated as a work of art and displayed in some European art galleries. Not upheld (good taste and decency, children's interests).

Greek Orthodox Community of Wellington and Suburbs Inc and Television New Zealand Ltd - 1999-067

Tonight. News bulletin related China’s decision to veto a continued United Nations peacekeeping force in the Former Yugoslav Republic of Macedonia (FYROM). Item used the name "Macedonia" on several occasions for FYROM. Complaint that use of the name Macedonia for FYROM was inaccurate and untruthful, and that the broadcast was unbalanced and unfair because the UN had not recognised any country by that name. Declined to determine (accuracy, balance).
