Summary "Aleppo to Aqaba" was the title of the episode of Great Train Journeys broadcast on TV One at 8. 30pm on 20 January 1998. On behalf of the Wellington Palestine Group, A Sidani complained to the broadcaster, Television New Zealand Ltd, that the programme breached the standards relating to accuracy and balance by including a map which showed Israel as including the Occupied Territories. In response, TVNZ pointed out that Israel was named in only one of the three maps shown. However, it acknowledged that in each map the boundary of Israel did not allow for the Occupied Territories and, accordingly, TVNZ upheld the complaint about inaccuracy. Although the programme was already dated and unlikely to be rescreened, TVNZ said it had made arrangements for the matter to be tagged for attention should it be rescreened....

Summary On two occasions on 31 July 1998 between 9. 00-9. 30am, a caller to Hot 93FM referred to the winner of an on-air competition as "That bitch E…C…". The caller said she had helped the winner with the answers to the competition, but that the winner had refused to share the prize of a dinner for four. Station staff then made two hoax calls in a similar vein. Ms C, the winner of the competition, complained to the Broadcasting Standards Authority under s. 8(1)(c) of the Broadcasting Act 1989 that her privacy was breached by the broadcast. She also complained directly to the station that it contravened the requirement for broadcasters to observe standards of good taste and decency. She reported that she had been extremely upset by the calls....

Summary The television reviewer on RNZ’s Nine to Noon programme, Tom Frewen, stated that TVNZ "now feels" that it need not carry the leaders’ opening and closing addresses for the elections, and stated "That’s how far it’s moved away from the idea of public broadcasting". The review was broadcast was on 24 March 1999. Television New Zealand Ltd complained to Radio New Zealand Ltd, the broadcaster, that the statement was wrong, and misrepresented TVNZ’s position as had been advanced in its submissions to the Electoral Law Select Committee made on 17 March. It sought an apology. Referring to the context of the comment, RNZ stated that the comment was neither untruthful nor inaccurate. It declined to uphold the complaint.
